RAUB: Handicraft made from the local resources could be another added value for money for home stay programme participants.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said such products should worthwhile as memoribilias for tourists.
Dr Ng said it would interesting for home stay guests to bring home handicrafts made by their hosts.
“The crafts may not neccesarily be expensive or oversized and made from recycled materials,” she said during a visit to homestay operators in Kampong Sungai Pasu and Kampong Gali Hilir here.
Also present were a visiting team of craftsmen from Taiwan led by the Taipei Economy and Culture Office representative Lo Yu-chang.
Taiwanese craftsmen Hung Hsin-Fu, Lee Yung-Mo and Liang Kuo-tung represented their country during the courtesy call.
They gave lessons in craft making to some 60 local participants during their two week visit here.
Dr Ng said the Taiwanese craftsmen were roped-in for the home stay programmes in both villages for their contribution to the Taiwanese handicraft industry.
They were invited to Malaysia under the courtesy of Taiwan’s Tourism Minister.
On the homestay programmes, Dr Ng said activities provided for the international guests included rubber tapping, fishing, jungle trekkings and other local activities.
She added that traditional handicraft production should not be taken lightly.
“We should develop this to create an additional source of income for the homestay operators.
“Soon, they too will train other home stay programme participants.”
Sungai Pasu, added Dr Ng, was nominated as a 21st Century home stay programme by fulfilling criterias such as an up-to-date communication system, garden, infrastructure and other basic amenities available in the village.
“Tourists love to stay in Kampong Sungai Pasu because they could enjoy a traditional lifestyle while maintaining a modern set up.
“The village is also located about 10 minutes drive from Raub town,” she said.
