MANADO (North Sulawesi): The Tourism Ministry is upbeat about chalking up to 25 million tourist arrivals this year.
To do this, minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen intends to aggressively promote two sure-fire sectors: the luxury lifestyle holidays and MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions).
The ministry also plans to lure tourists with, among others, a 45-minute helicopter exploration of Kuala Lumpur, tax-free shopping spree and sale of branded goods.
“Foreign tourists who love luxury lifestyle holidays often spend a long time at a destination and these factors are seen as giving a big contribution to the national economy,” Dr Ng said on the sidelines of the Asean Tourism Forum here yesterday.
She said luxury lifestyle tourism was capable of boosting economic results, based on Malaysia’s RM56bil earnings in 2010 thanks to the 24.6 million tourists who came to the country.
Other than promotions and campaigns, the ministry cooperated with national and foreign airlines to bring in the tourists, she added.
Last year, Malaysia and China were the only Asian nations among the 10 most-visited countries in the world. China was in fourth place while Malaysia was ninth. – Bernama
