GEORGE TOWN, July 29 (Bernama) — The Penang state government has been urged to regulate watersports activities at Batu Ferringhi by enforcing the Personal Watercraft (Penang) Enactment 1999.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should take serious views on unlicensed watersports activities and make sure the beach was safe.
“I appeal to the chief minister to use the enactment to license operators in order to protect tourists on the beach,” Ng told reporters here Thursday.
The ministry held talks with hoteliers and tour operators after a hotel guest was beaten up by water sport operators when he reprimanded them for operating too close to the beach over the weekend.
Ng said about 600,000 tourists visited Batu Ferringhi yearly and unregulated watersports activities could deter travellers from going there.
Ng said the ministry also urged the police to investigate the incident.
